Are you ready to celebrate?
After more than three years, two construction phases, eight million pounds of steel, and multiple moves to keep Union operations in service to the UA campus, it's time to celebrate and dedicate your new Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC).
We have planned six days of numerous activities and fun events that evoke the main themes of your new Union: Celebration, Involvement, Memorial, Diversity, Heritage and Community. As you explore this magnificent facility, we encourage you to participate in the daily events, sample new fares, watch a free movie, or catch the Fireworks Finale. With over 100 events, there's something for everyone. You may even win a prize when you play the daily GO games.
The GO celebration is our way of saying thank you. Thank you for your support, patience and understanding as this project went through thousands of hours of planning, reviewing, and construction to achieve a model student union.
Now let's celebrate your new U!

Student Union Grand Opening Celebration Planned For February
During the week of February 17-22, 2003, the University of Arizona and the Tucson community will celebrate the completion of the new Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC). The week long celebrations will kick off on Monday, February 17, at noon with the official dedication ceremony, a ribbon cutting celebration, entertainment and performances.
Throughout the week there will be numerous activities, tours, food specials, daily giveaways, performances, entertainment and celebrations for students, staff and faculty at the Union and Bookstore facilities. Each day has a specific theme, representing the values of the University of Arizona and the new SUMC. The theme days include celebration, involvement, heritage, memorial, diversity, and community.
"Students, community members, and various departments on campus are involved in preparing a week long celebration to showcase what the University's new Union and Bookstore have to offer," says Dan Adams, Director of the Arizona Student Unions. "After some three years of construction, the new SUMC will be a great asset to the entire community."
The new Student Union Memorial Center will be among the largest Student Unions in the country at 405,000 square feet. Students, faculty, and staff can interact in the numerous state-of-the-art venues, including retail opportunities, bookstore, specialty restaurants, lounges, meeting rooms, games center, a post office, copy center, grand ballroom, computer lab, and much more.
The SUMC, when completed will house the Arizona Student Unions, University of Arizona Bookstores, ASUA (student government), the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership (Greek Life, Commuter Students, Leadership Programs, and Campus Activities), Shared Governance and Career Services.
"Our new SUMC is able to incorporate dining, retail, involvement, entertainment, and student services all under one roof," says Nick Adamakis, marketing director for the Arizona Student Unions. "The programs and services available to UA students are some of the most comprehensive in the country."
