2007 Conference Highlights
ACLC 2007 was held on Friday, February 16th through Sunday, February 18th in the Student Union Memorial Center on the campus of the University of Arizona.
Over 400 participants, representing over 37 colleges and universitites from throughout the nation and 3 countries were in attendance.
- Participants from 13 states attended this years conference, coming from as far away as New York, Illinois, and Florida
The conference theme, "Trekking Mt. Leadership" was incorporated throughout the scheduled workshops under the following sub-themes:
- Personal Leadership Development
- These workshops focus on developing practical knowledge and skills to enhance a participant's leadership ability.
- New Idea/ New Program
- These workshops involve having the presenter either share about a program/event on his or her campus and how to implement a similar program/event on the participant's campus. Workshops may also focus on new ideas about leadership through research or discovery.
- Issues in Leadership
- These workshops focus on critical issues that leaders must consider and face in the 21st century. These can include globalization, social issues, current events, and more.
- Leadership Transformation
- These workshops focus on learning about new perspectives about leadership topics. These include simulations and experiential activities to expose participants to deep learning and growth around particular leadership topics. These can include experiential exercises on diversity and social justice, self-reflection, and personal values.

- "Facing Trans: Empowerment, Inclusion, and Advocacy"
A Motivational Speaker on Friday Evening:
- Thomas J. Spaulding - President and CEO of the forty-two year old international non-profit global leadership program, Up With People.
A Motivational Speaker on Saturday Morning
- Brent Larson - Behavioral counselor and lifestyle coach for the Mayo Health Clinic Health Solutions Wellness Program in Rochester, Minnesota
A Motivational Speaker on Sunday Morning
- Jessica Petitt - Director of Social Justice Leadership Programs at The University of Arizona.
A Keynote Speaker on Saturday Evening
- Chad Crittenden - Survivor: Vanatu castmember who shares his personal story of Discovering the Will to Survive through his experiences on Survivor as an amputee.
All Conference Teambuilding: A two part series consisting of one session on Friday and Saturday where students learn about teambuilding processes and practically apply teambuilding concepts and the
Leadership Model. This also gave conference participants a chance to get to know students from all over the country while working on teambuilding skills.
Several service projects, both on and off campus, to further tie the notion of service to the community with leadership development: Ben's Bells, Neighborhood Beautification, Children's Party, Diversity Appreciation Hike
Over 300 participants earned an ACLC Leadership Certificate by attending and contributing to at least 8 workshops, service activites, or teambuilders.
Entertainment throughout the weekend that included a performance by the Charles Darwin comedy group, Karaoke, Game Night, and a Block Party sponsored by The University of Arizona Activities Board!
2006 Conference Highlights
ACLC 2006 was held on Friday, February 17th through Sunday, February 19th in the Student Union Memorial Center on the campus of the University of Arizona.
Over 350 participants, representing over 20 colleges and universities from throughout the nation were in attendance
- Participants from 9 states attended this years conference, coming from as far away as New York, Rhode Island, and Florida
The conference theme, “The House that Leadership Built” was incorporated throughout the scheduled workshops under the following sub-themes:
- Foundations, Blueprints and Planning
- Focused upon foundational leadership skills and theory
- Tools, Teamwork and Building
- Focused upon practical, hands-on leadership skills for use in organizational settings
- Neighbors, Community and Sharing
- Focused on broadening awareness of current community and global issues
- Maintenance, Additions and Cleaning
- Focused upon challenging held beliefs and ways of thinking through simulations activities and discussions
Approximately 60 workshops were presented, including:
- “Your Life: Understanding Your Personal Leadership Journey”
- “5 Keys to More Effective Leadership”
- “Leadership Boot Camp: Teamwork Tools to Overcome Obstacles”
- “I Thought About Running a Marathon…Once!”
- “Professional Development: Image is Everything!”
A Motivational Speaker on Friday Evening:
- Derek Greenfield—Senior Consultant for VOICES (Visions for Organizations and Individuals to Create Effective Solutions)
A Motivational Speaker on Saturday Morning:
- Ed Ackerley—Principal at Ackerely Advertising in Tucson and author of Creating Magic.
A Motivational Speaker on Sunday Morning:
- Johnnie Tuitel—Founder of Alternatives in Motion, a nonprofit 501 (C)(3) corporation which provides wheelchairs for people who would otherwise be unable to receive one.
A Keynote Speaker on Saturday Evening:
- Byron Garrett—Founder of LifeWorks International, where LIFE stands for “Leadership Is Fundamental Everyday”, and author of The ABC’s of Life. Currently Mr. Garrett lives in Washington DC and works as the National Program Leader for Mission Mandates at the United States Department of Agriculture.
Saturday evening featured panel discussions titled “Groundbreaking Discussions: Starting a New House”
- Initiating Long-term Change: How Ideas Become Policy
- Overcoming Obstacles: How to Ensure Success By Creating Positive Change
- Setting the Agenda: How the Media Affects Societal Change
- Making an Immediate Impact: How We Can Create Change Today
Teambuilding Track: A three part series consisting of one session on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday where students learn about teambuilding processes and practically apply teambuilding concepts. Participants received a CD with the various teambuilding activities.
All Conference Teambuilding: A chance to get to know conference participants from all over the country while working on your teambuilding skills
Several service projects, both on and off campus, to further tie the notion of service to the community with leadership development: Habitat for Humanity, Ben’s Bells, The Giving Tree, New Beginnings, and Casa de los Niños
Over 200 participants earned an ACLC Leadership Certificate by attending and contributing to at least 8 workshops, service activities, or teambuilders.
Entertainment throughout the weekend that included a Casino Night in collaboration with the University Activities Board (UAB), musical group Por la Gente, dancing to the grooves of a DJ, karaoke, step group Sexy Soul Divas, and a performance by the U of A Olympic Tae Kwon Do group.
2005 Conference Highlights
ACLC 2005 was held on Friday, February 18
th through Sunday, February 20
th in the Student Union Memorial Center on the campus of the University of Arizona.
- Over 20 schools from the Arizona and the Southwest region were in attendance
- The conference theme, “Leadership for a Lifetime…” was incorporated throughout the scheduled program workshops under the following sub-themes:
- Beginning Leadership
- Developing Leadership
- Rejuvenation
- Passing the torch
- Approximately 60 workshops were presented, including:
- “An Army of One: Slam Poetry and Individual Activism to Inspire Change & Hope”
- “Leading in College When the Heat Is On”
- “Don’t Change That Channel! An In-Depth Look at Diversity I Media”
- “2 many 1’s: Prioritizing the Number Ones
- “Leadership, Culture, & Organizational Change”
- A Guest Speaker on Friday Evening:
- Derek Greenfield-Senior Consultant for VOICES (Visions for Organizations and Individuals to Create Effective Solutions
- A Motivational Speaker on Saturday morning:
- Dr. Shirley Jennings-Dean of Student Development at pima Community College's East Campus
- Paul Loeb-Saturday Night’s Keynote Speaker came from Seattle to discuss issues surrounding Civic Engagement and Leadership
- A fundraising dinner in support of the conference where students and Tucson locals had the chance to meet and discuss issues with Paul Loeb
- Entertainment on Friday included various bands, activities in the Games Room, a movie, and a performance by a Step Team
- Entertainment on Saturday included UA Latenights, a tradition at the University of Arizona with a DJ, Give-a-ways, a Raffle for prizes, a Magician, Caricatures, use of the Games Room, Billiards, Open-mic, Poker, Blackjack, and other Casino related games.
- Sunday included an All-Campus Artistic Teambuilding Event (ACATE) Display of artwork created the previous night
- Several service projects were incorporated into the Saturday and Sunday schedules to provide hands-on experience with regard to leadership skills:
- “Hand Me Some Advice” with Campus Recreation-YES to Kids
- “Tucson Clean & Beautiful”
- “When I Grow Up, I Want to be Just Like You” with the Boys and Girls Club
- “Give the Gift of Smiles” with Reels for Kids and the University Medical Center
2004 Conference Highlights
ACLC 2004 was held on Friday, February 20 through Sunday, February 21 in the Student Union Memorial Center on the campus of the University of Arizona.
- 16 schools were in attendance from all over Arizona and the Southwestern region
- The conference theme, “The Little Things Make the Biggest Difference” was incorporated into our entire conference program
- Approximately 50 workshops were presented including:
- “Engaging the Unengaged, Disengaging the over-engaged”
- “Hip-Hop as a Tool for Social Transformation”
- “Got Diversity?”
- “How to Stay on Fire… Without Burning Out”
- “Harry Potter & the Return to Citizen Leadership”

- A Friday Evening Leadership Panel Discussion with

- Marco A. Lopez, Jr. (Exec Director of Gov. Janet Napolitano’s “Arizona-Mexico Commission”)
- Laila Sarah (Constituent Services Director for Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup)
- Craig Kielburger- Saturday Night’s Keynote Speaker flew all the way from Canada to speak to our conference participants and Tucson locals
- A fundraising dinner in support of the conference attracted numerous Tucson business and community leaders
- Entertainment included a Friday evening hypnosis performance by Chuck Milligan and Saturday night included a movie, open games room, volleyball, and a performance from a local band
- Student speakers were selected to discuss their view of “The Little Things Make the Biggest Difference”
- Sunday morning service projects attracted many to put their newly acquired leadership skills into action by volunteering for a number of different organizations, including:
- Casa De Los Niños Soccer Game & Housekeeping
- American Red Cross Blood Drive
- Letter Writing to Your Elected Officials
- Neighborhood Clean-Up
2003 Conference Highlights
ACLC 2003 was held on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1, 2003 in the Student Union Memorial Center on the campus of the University of Arizona.
- Over 700 students registered to attend the conference
- 20 different colleges and universities from all over Arizona were represented (some students came from as far away as San Diego!)
- Over 200 of the conference attendees were from other schools
- 45 different programs and workshops were presented including:
- YWCAs Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium
- Leadership When the Heat is On
- Harry Potter & the Return to Citizen Leadership
- Networking 101
- Creating Multiculturalism on Campus
- Programs, workshops and roundtables fell into the interest tracks:
- Involvement & Leadership
- Diversity/Multiculturalism
- Greek Leadership
- Business/Entrepreneurship
- Friday evening activities included a movie, a comedy performance, a concert by a local band, and fun in the Wilbers Underground games room
