Leadership Courses for Credit

Leadership courses through the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership are 1-3 credit academic courses designed to prepare students for leadership responsibilities on campus and in the larger community. Twenty-two different upper and lower-division leadership courses are offered. Courses offered are listed below:

 

Social Justice Leadership
EDL 270 2 credits
Understand multiculturalism and social justice from a leadership perspective.
Service Leadership
EDL 271 2 credits
Students will learn about and examine the foundation and history of community service and non-profit organizations.
Professional Development and Leadership
EDL 272 2 credits
Students will learn career development and post-college preparation skills.
Essential Skills Leadership
EDL 280 2 credits
Students will enhance interpersonal leadership competence by building the practical skills necessary to effectively lead.
Blue Chip Paraprofessional Leadership Development
EDL 280 2 credits
Students will learn facilitation skills in group settings. Students must be selected as Blue Chip Team Leaders to register for this course.
Leadership Training for Orientation Leaders
EDL 280 2 credits
Students will learn about student services units, academic functions, and other support services. Students must be selected as Orientation Leaders to register for this course.
Professional Intern Program
EDL 280 2 credits
Students will learn leadership and management strategies for Student Union student employment positions. Students must be selected as Professional Interns to register for this course.
Peer Leadership and Education-A.N.G.L.E
EDL 280 2 credits
Students will learn facilitation skills in group settings. Students must be in the A.N.G.L.E. program to register for this course.
Event Planning and Leadership-Up Late
EDL 281 2 credits
Students will learn various event planning and program design concepts to create Up Late programming for students.
Event Planning and Leadership-Tunnel of Oppression
EDL 281 2 credits
Students will learn various event planning and program design concepts to create the Tunnel of Oppression.
Event Planning and Leadership-NCLC
EDL 281 2 credits
Students will learn event planning and program design concepts to plan the National Collegiate Leadership Conference. Students must be selected as members of the NCLC Planning Committee to register for this course.
Career and Academic Related Exploration in Leadership
EDL 282 2 credits
Students will develop leadership, presentation, group interaction, and career development skills. This course is designed for Second Year students in Student Support Services.
Leadership and Involvement Preceptorship
EDL 291 1-3 credits
Students will serve as coordinators, teaching assistants, and high-level facilitators to enhance their leadership development.  Students must be selected as a Preceptor to register for this course.
Leadership and Involvement Internship
EDL 293 1-3 credits
Students will work behind-the scenes, conduct research or assessment, or design programs/projects to enhance their leadership development.  Students must be selected as an Intern to register for this course.
Critical Perspectives on Leadership in Society
EDL 370 2 credits
Students will learn about and critique how leadership is designed and perceived in American society.
Topics in Leadership-Critical Issues in Greek Life
EDL 396c 3 credits

Students will examine the contemporary issues facing the North American Fraternity and Sorority Movement.

Topics in Leadership-Student Affairs Preparation
EDL 396c 3 credits
Students will learn about the field of student affairs and network with professionals in the field.
Exploring Leadership
HED 297a 2 credits

Students will learn leadership strategies for creating sustainable community change. The five sections of this course, Arts, Eco, Global, Service, and SocialEntrepreneurial, are limited to Phase II Blue Chip students.

To Take a Leadership Course

Check out the schedule of classes for each semester and register on-line. There are no applications to take the course, although some courses are restricted for particular groups of student leaders. Various courses are offered each semester and enrolling in a course is included in the cost of tuition for full-time students.
