| The original Memorial Student Union was built nearly half a century ago, in 1951. As the student body grew, bits and pieces were added to the Union until it grew to its current, somewhat lumpish size. Originally designed for 15,000 students, the Union has some 74,000 visitors daily! Moreover, the additions over time are aging at different rates, and the building is plagued with leaks, rotting pipes, asbestos, and so many other problems that it would take $14 million just to bring it up to code. Instead, a team of designers and builders (Swinerton-Wallberg and MHTN) will build an all-new Union/UA bookstore to be completed in 2002. |
