Outstanding Achievements

Prof. Sallie A. Marston
Department of Geography and Regional Development

Prof. Marston won the textbook and academic authors award for the best social science textbook in 2005 for "World Regions in Global Context: Peoples, Places, and Environments" co-authored with Paul Knox and Diana Liverman. The award brings significant recognition to the University of Arizona because it is considered the "Emmy" of all social science textbooks in the world.

Dr. Laurence Hurley
College of Pharmacy and Arizona Cancer Center

Dr. Hurley is the 2005 recipient of the George and Christine Sosnovsky Award in Cancer Therapy from the Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom. The Royal Society of Chemistry is the largest organization in Europe for advancing the chemical sciences. The award recognizes landmark achievements in the medicinal chemistry of cancer diseases - awarded to Dr. Hurley for his leading role in interpreting the molecular basis of a number of anti-cancer drugs and his pioneering study of protein-DNA-drug interactions.

Dr. Vicki Chandler
Regents' Professor and Director of the BIO5 Institute

Dr. Chandler has recently received the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's Pioneer Award. The award, made to exceptionally creative scientists, will provide Chandler with approximately $ 4 million to support her research, which has the potential to lead significant advances in human health. Dr. Chandler is the first researcher in Arizona to receive the highly competitive award and is one of only 13 recipients selected this year from 840 scientists.

Dr. Roy J. Glauber
Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Optical Sciences

Dr. Glauber, Professor of Physics at Harvard University and Adjunct Professor of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, has won a 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics for pioneering work on the nature and behavior of light. The Nobel Prize is the first international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. Dr. Glauber's achievement brings recognition to the Univeristy of Arizona on both a national and international scale.

Satomi Hayashi
Doctorial Student in the College of Nursing

Ms. Hayashi was honored with membership into the Japan Academy of Nursing Sciences (JANS) in August. The Japan Academy of Nursing Sciences is a prestigious scientific research society that is part of the Science Council of Japan. JANS members are nursing scholars, researchers, and educators. Ms. Hayashi's achievement brings international recognition to the College of Nursing and the University of Arizona

Alan J. Gelenberg, MD
Faculty Chair and Department Head of the Department of Psychiatry

Dr. Gelenberg was selected by the American Psychiatric Association to chair the work group that will create the standards for practice guidelines in the treatment of Major Depression. In March 2005, Dr. Gelenberg celebrated his 18th anniversary as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. During his tenure, JCP has become the best-read peer-reviewed journal in psychiatry. It has become fifth in the world in journal impact factor in the field, doubled its number of published papers, and tripled the numbers of citations.

Dr. Dan Adams
Director, Arizona Student Unions

Dr. Adams and his staff were instrumental in the vision and implementation of the design/build process that created the current Student Union Memorial Center which culminated in the awarding of the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) facility design award, large category. Dr. Adams and his staff's drive and determination over the course of 6 years directly touched every aspect of the building including space allocations and layout, architectural features and all fixtures, furnishings and equipment. Without Dr. Adams and his staff's direct support, the SUMC would not be the facility we all enjoy today.

Dr. Barbara S. Hutchinson
Librarian and Director of the Office of Arid Lands Information Center

In February 2005, Dr. Hutchinson was nominated as one of the fifteen top leaders in the college and university library field to been appointed as a UCLA Senior Fellow for 2005 following a nationwide competition conducted by the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

Dr. Joseph S. Alpert
Head, Department of Medicine

Dr. Alpert has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Medicine, effective January 1, 2005.  Dr. Alpert has authored 43 books and monographs, over 500 publications, nearly 200 chapters, review articles, and editorials; and 100 abstracts.  Dr. Alpert has been a member of the Editorial Boards of 10 Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Journals.

Joe Giacalone
Assistant Professor, Department of Planetary Sciences, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory
Recently won an NSF Faculty Early Career Award - a highly competitive award which provides a little over $1,000,000 over five years for faculty in early stages of their career.
Dr. Martin Tomasko
Research Professor, Department of Planetary Sciences, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory

Dr. Tomasko is the principal investigator on the Descent Imager Spectral Radiometer (DISR) on the Huygens probe.  He led the team that developed the panoramic camera that took pictures as the probe descended to the surface of Titan, Saturn’s moon, and continued to take pictures and relay them back to Earth for two hours after landing.
